What is self-care?

Self-care is about looking after yourself in a healthy way. Some of the things we do we take for granted or are not aware of it; examples can be brushing your teeth, personal hygiene, doing some exercise, managing common conditions (like headaches, colds and flu) or living with a long-term health problem, such as asthma or diabetes.

As a self-care aware practice we are here to help you feel able to look after your own health when it is right for you. When you come in with your health issues, we will actively involve you in the management.

Did you know?

  • The NHS belongs to all of us – help us to keep it working smoothly by turning up for appointments; if you are unable to make it for an appointment, please call up reception and inform them as soon as you know you are not going to need it - this gives another one of our patients a chance to be seen
  • Every time you see a GP it costs the NHS £36, on average for a 9.22 minute consultation (PSSRU figures 2015-16)
  • A visit to Accident and Emergency costs £114 (from published reference cost figures released by Department of Health for 2012-13)
  • Nearly half of people with long term conditions such as high blood pressure, asthma, diabetes do not take their medicines as prescribed.

Self-care for common conditions

Did you know that one in five GP visits are for common conditions, such as backache, headache or cough?

For most people, they are not serious health problems – you may be wanting to know how to best to relieve it, or which treatments are effective. You might also be wanting to know how long you’re going to suffer for or what changes in symptoms to look out for.

The positive news is that self-care can help you manage most of these problems. It may mean you don’t have to spend time waiting to see your GP but can get on and start tackling your symptoms. Self-care for common conditions can also help free up some of your GP’s time, making it easier to get an appointment when you have a more serious condition.

These provide useful facts about your condition, what you can expect to happen, how to help yourself, when you should see your GP and where to find out more information. Physical activity:

NHS Health Checks:

  • This is a mid-life MOT for 40-74 year olds, once every 5 years.  Your GP practice can review your cholesterol, blood pressure and lifestyle to see if you might be at greater risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes or dementia in the future.

One You:

  • The website is aimed at adults 40+ but can be used by others to get information and do self-checks that help you move more, eat more healthily and assess your mental health. The One You website includes links to many of the sites above, as well as apps and self-assessments.
